The mission of Focus on Senior Citizens is to meet the needs of seniors, enabling them to remain independant, active and healthy for as long as possible.

FOCUS is a tax exempt, 501(c)(3), organization.   

As a comprehensive social service organization, FOCUS offers programs and coordinates services that not only involve the elderly in meaningful activities but also assist families who provide care to older members.

FOCUS welcomes senior citizens regardless of economic status, disability, race, sex, or religious affiliation.

Last year, 2008, we served 4,800 people, 95% who were over sixty years of age


Programs

Foster Grandparent Program

Foster Grandparents give one on one daily attention to children and youth with special needs at schools and other non-profit agencies. Fifty eight seniors helped 290 school aged children serving them a total of 37,000 hours.

Nutrition Programs

The Nutrition Programs served over 35,000 hot meals, with activities planned each day before the meals are served. Transportation is available to the nutrition sites for a small donation of $1 roundtrip.

Retired and Senior Volunteer Program

556 seniors volunteered throughout the city of Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, and Hale County accumulating 80,000 hours of service. Druid City Hospital, Department of Veterans Affairs, and local nursing homes are just a few of the locations available to volunteer.

Senior Center

The Senior Center provided 2872 seniors with 26,000 units of service in the area of social activities including excercise programs, dance lessons, board games, chess, bridge, canasta, quilting, singing, health awareness, and holiday celebration. FOCUS helped 1700 seniors with their Federal and State Income Taxes, and provided over 250 low income seniors with holiday food baskets and clothing.

Supportive Services

Supportive services provides chore aid, emergency assistance, sitters, telephone and Medicaid Waiver Services. Unduplicated clients for last year was 3,028.

Transportation

The Transportation Department provided countywide transportation for 614 unduplicated clients with 18,000 units of service and logged over 336,000 miles. Transportation is available for doctor's appointments, social sevice agencies, and nutrition sites. The Transportation Department also plans many entertaining trips for seniors to a variety of exciting locations.
